- Carpal tunnel syndrome (wrist, thumb, index and mid-finger pain)
- Rheumatoid arthritis (inflamed joints)
- Birth defects (webbed hands, short, missing or extra fingers)
- Dupuytren's contracture (tight, thickened hand skin)
- Hand injury or trauma
FAQ
How is carpal tunnel treated?
A procedure called carpal tunnel release can relieve pressure that builds up within the carpal tunnel. By releasing the tissue that is pressing on the lower hand and wrist nerves, the surgery can relieve pain, tingling and numbness. This requires an incision from the mid-palm to wrist.
How is Dupuytren's contracture treated?
Dupuytren's contracture (when thick, scar-like tissue forms in the palm and restricts finger motion) is treated by cutting and separating the bands of thickened tissue, freeing the tendons and allowing better finger movement.
How are hand deformities treated?
Congenital deformities include syndactyly, short, missing, or deformed fingers, immobile tendons, and abnormal nerves or blood vessels. These conditions interfere with proper hand growth and impair function. They can be corrected at an early age, sometimes during infancy. The surgery varies depending on the conditions presented.
What happens after hand surgery?
After hand surgery, prescription medications can help you manage pain. The treated hand may need to be immobilized for some time. A dressing and splint are used after surgery to restrict motion and promote healing. A hand therapist is often an integral part of the recovery process. In addition to Dr. James (Jim) Lowe's post-operative instructions, be sure to follow your physical therapist's advice.
