What to Expect during a Blepharoplasty

Consultation

Dr. Lowe offers in-depth consultations to patients at his Oklahoma City, OK, practice. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Lowe will listen to your goals and provide personalized recommendations.

Arrival

When you arrive at our Oklahoma City practice, we will escort you to our comfortable, fully accredited operating room. Both upper and lower eyelid surgery can be completed in about two to three hours.

Anesthesia

Before we begin, we will administer local anesthesia to prevent any discomfort. We also offer intravenous (IV) sedation and general anesthesia to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their treatment. When we use general anesthesia, we have a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) on-site to ensure your safety.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is created near the existing crease of the upper eyelid. This helps minimize the appearance of scars. Any unneeded skin is trimmed away, and in some cases, muscles are repositioned. Finally, the remaining skin is lifted and sutured into place. Using the latest methods and techniques, Dr. Lowe is able to avoid overcorrection and deliver natural-looking results.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

While upper blepharoplasty primarily involves the removal of unnecessary skin tissue, lower eyelid surgery eliminates both sagging skin and fat deposits. To perform this procedure, Dr. Lowe administers local anesthesia and creates an incision just below the lower lash line. Then, he can carefully sculpt the area by removing excess tissue, muscle, and fat.

Immediate Recovery What to Expect in the Days after Surgery

To ensure that you heal properly, Dr. Lowe will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. It is important that you closely follow these guidelines to ensure a comfortable and successful recovery.

In the days after the procedure, patients can expect some degree of:

Tenderness
Discomfort
Swelling
Bruising

However, these side effects are temporary and should subside in about 10 to 14 days. If you are uncomfortable, you can take over-the-counter pain medication, apply a cold compress, or elevate your head to alleviate pain, bruising, and swelling.

You will need to take a few days off of work to rest and recover at home. You should avoid strenuous activities (which can cause bleeding and discomfort) and avoid wearing contact lenses until Dr. Lowe says it's okay to resume.

Long-Term Recovery What to Expect in the Weeks and Months after Surgery

Most patients are ready to return to work and most normal activities after 14 days, but it can take a few months to fully heal.

Because Dr. Lower strategically places the incisions in the folds of the eyelids, scarring is very discreet and barely noticeable by others. To reduce the appearance of scars, you can apply Vitamin E or aloe vera to the scar tissue.
